2021 Scottish Whisky Awards – Brand Experience of the Year

Co-founders Bill Dobbie and Alasdair Day first met in 2013 and formed R&B Distillers with the common goal of building Scotland’s leading artisanal distillery. Focusing on local production, provenance, quality, and doing things differently.

By 2015, they had identified the Isle of Raasay as providing the ingredients for the perfect spirit, and planning permission to begin work revitalizing the Isle of Raasay’s nineteenth century Borodale House into a state-of-the-art distillery, visitor center, and luxury accommodation was granted in 2016.

Starting with a blank sheet of paper, they set about designing a distillery to create exceptional whisky that develops elegance, complexity, and depth early on in the maturation process and a handcrafted Hebridean gin that encapsulates Raasay’s style, character and impressive geological variety.

Since its establishment, the Isle of Raasay Distillery has brought job opportunities to the island, worked closely with other local businesses and become embedded in the island’s tight-knit community.

Part of the distillery’s ethos is to produce, mature, bottle and market every drop of spirit directly from the island. This seeks to maximize the influence of the island on the spirit, and the distillery on the island. To quote the inimitable Whisky Writer Dave Broom at our distillery opening: ‘we are not just making alcohol, we are making spirit.’

Na Sia Through the Ages Single Casks

The time has arrived. We are excited to be bringing you our very first age statement whisky. Our iconic Na Sia recipe, deconstructed.

The first set in our aged single cask collection – ‘Na Sia Single Cask Series: Through The Ages’. This time evolving in age with each biennial release.

Looking ahead, we will be releasing these casks every 2 years as part of our ‘Through The Ages’ series, adding 2 years of maturation every time. 5, 7, 9, 11…

All released as Single Casks, hand-bottled and age stated. Natural cask strength, non-chill filtered.

The Bordeaux red wine casks we use are made from two Oak species, Quercus patrea & Quercus robur, adding savory spice, whilst the red wine imparts tannins into the new make spirit. The casks were previously used to age three vintages of Bordeaux red wine, resulting in sumptuous, fruity top notes in our spirit like blackberries, plums, and cherries.

Nose: Toffee, Scottish tablet

Palate: Sweet ginger, maple syrup, BBQ smoke

Finish: Malted granary bread, salted caramel, BBQ spare-ribs.

59.7% alc. 296 bottles

The most common types of casks used to mature Scotch Whisky are ex-Bourbon barrels made from the most prevalent species of North American White Oak, Quercus alba. As well as the classic vanilla flavor that you get from this type of Oak, we are looking for a spicier black pepper note and more of a butterscotch flavor in our ex-Rye cask matured spirit. The barrels come from Woodford Reserve distillery in this instance.

Nose: Vanilla, butterscotch, mixed spice

Palate: Black pepper, sweet spice, vanilla, butterscotch

Finish: White pepper, vanilla, butterscotch, wood smoke

60.6% alc. 177 bottles

A North American Oak, Chinkapin (Quercus muehlenbergii) with a high char and high toast greatly impacts color & flavor without overpowering the maturing spirit. The high char increases the internal surface area of the cask, allowing more of the spirit to come into contact with the oak, resulting in a much darker color. The high toast caramelizes the natural sugars in the oak, adding lovely, sweet caramel and smoky barbeque flavors to our spirit.

Nose: Savoury spice, cinnamon

Palate: Cherries, black grapes, sandalwood, cloves

Finish: Salty, dry, savoury spice, lingering wood smoke.

Isle of Raasay Ex-Bordeaux Single Cask 2023 – Aged in first-fill ex-Bordeaux red wine casks. Removed from the blend, this wine-aged Raasay spirit stands impressively on its own with a full aroma of fruit cake, grape skin, fig preserves, and blackberry jam. The peat smoke, heathery and mild, is laced throughout, almost adding a creaminess to the experience. The palate is bright and sweet with barley sugar, cherry juice, and grape Jolly Ranchers. A peppery spice helps to reign in some of that sweetness, but it remains rather exuberant. A soft, ashy smoke arrives on the midpalate to further subdue some of those sugary dark fruits, giving way to exotic oak and salty pipe smoke on the finish. A touch sweet but still an impressive young single malt. Reviewed: Cask 18/664. 123.4 proof. A-
